The New York Drama Critics’ Circle has announced the winners of their annual awards.

Hairspray, the colorfully zany musical about integration and hair-bobbing in 1960s Baltimore won the award for Best Musical, while Richard Greenberg’s Take Me Out, about a major league baseball player who reveals his homosexuality to the world, took the Best Play prize. Alan Bennett’s two-part monologue series Talking Heads was named Best Foreign Play.

The Drama Critics’ Circle comprises 20 drama critics from major news sources in New York, with Charles Isherwood (Variety) serving as the president of the organization. The Drama Critics’ Circle Award is the second oldest theater award in the United States, second only to the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The awards will be presented on Tuesday, May 20 at 5pm at a cocktail reception at Sardi’s.
