Actor David Howey and pianist Kiyoko Takeuti are set to participate in The Philadelphia Orchestra’s presentation of Modest Mugorsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition, to be offered June 3 in Verizon Hall at The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Gerard McBurney will host the concert, which will be conducted by Charles Duoit and is part of the orchestra’s Beyond the Score series.
Mugorsky’s Pictures musicalizes his reactions to the pieces he encountered in an exhibit of works by Viktor Hartmann. Though only a few of the artist’s watercolors and drawings remain, Musorgsky’s music provides glimpses of what it would have been like to experience them. A live multimedia documentary will accompany the performance.
Other upcoming offerings in the company’s Beyond the Score. series include Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4 (October 1), Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben (March 3), and Holst’s The Planets (May 13).
