An all star-reading of the screenplay of All About Eve, Joseph Mankiewicz’s classic film in which a conniving fan worms her way into the life of a great star of the theater, was held on Sunday, March 30 at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles as a benefit for The Actors’ Fund of America.
Directed by Gordon Davidson, the reading starred Stockard Channing as Margo Channing and Calista Flockhart as Eve Harrington, heading a cast that also included such luminaries as Angela Lansbury, Tim Curry, Victor Garber, Blythe Danner, John Ritter, Jennifer Tilly, Carl Reiner, Melissa Manchester, and Kirk Douglas. The event was chaired by Celeste Holm, one of the co-stars of the All About Eve film. The reading is reported to have raised $300,000 for The Actors’ Fund.
Founded in 1882, The Actors’ Fund offers a variety of programs including health care services, AIDS services, supportive housing, and a women’s health initiative. The organization assists people in every area of the entertainment industry — actors, musicians, dancers, screenwriters, film editors, and so on — providing essential assistance to more than 8,000 people each year.
