Original Cast Members of Wicked, The Book of Mormon, Beautiful, and More Talk "Readings and Workshops" on The Ensemblist
Actors discuss the evolution of Broadway musicals on the latest episode of the Broadway podcast.
"Readings and Workshops" is the title of the 29th episode of Mo Brady and Nikka Graff Lanzarone's Broadway-themed podcast The Ensemblist. The episode explores the developmental process that new musicals undergo to get them from the page to the stage. The evolution primarily involves readings and workshops that allow creative teams to get feedback from actors and small audiences while offering the show opportunities to receive financial backing from producers to further develop the musical.
Brady and Lanzarone discuss this process with three performers — Ben Cameron, Kevin Duda, and Ryann Redmond — who have seen various projects grow from their reading and workshop stages through to their opening night on Broadway.
Cameron, an original cast member of Wicked, discusses some of the drastic changes the hit musical encountered through its early stages. Duda, who worked on pre-Broadway readings and workshops for both The Book of Mormon and Beautiful — The Carole King Musical, explains how each musical has its own unique journey while describing the joy of originating roles. Redmond, a member of the If/Then ensemble, recounts her experience as Bridget in the original Broadway cast of Bring It On: The Musical, noting her ability to influence the character she helped to create.
