Producer Roy A. Somlyo Dies at 83 logo
Roy A. Somlyo, a longtime Broadway producer and former president of the American Theatre Wing, has died in New York at age 83, due to cancer.

Somlyo was the first managing producer for Tony Award Productions. (The Tonys are put on by the Wing and the Broadway League.) He was the Wing's president from 1998 to 2003. In recent years, he served as a consultant to the Drama Desk Awards.

Over a 60-year career, Somlyo worked in a variety of capacities, including company manager, general manger, and producer, on Broadway. Among the shows he worked on were The Matchmaker, Gypsy, Dear World, I Remember Mama, 84 Charing Cross Road, and A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine. In 1984, La Tragedie de Carmen, which he co-produced at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, won a special Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for Best Unique Theatrical Experience.
