Off-Broadway's Forever Dusty Sets a Closing Date
The off-Broadway ode to the music of Dusty Springfield has scheduled its final performance.
Forever Dusty, Kirsten Holly Smith and Jonathan Vankin's new bio-musical chronicling the life of British pop star Dusty Springfield, has announced it will conclude its off-Broadway run on April 7 after eight previews and 161 regular performances at New World Stages. Directed by Randal Myler (Almost Heaven), the show depicts Springfield's journey through both her career and her romance with Claire, an African-American music journalist, while weaving in some of her greatest hits, including "Son of a Preacher Man," "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," and "The Look of Love."
In addition to cowriting the book, Smith also stars in the title role and is joined by castmates Christina Sajous, Coleen Sexton, Benim Foster, Sean Patrick Hopkins, Ashley Betton, and Jonathan C. Kaplan. Producers are currently working on plans for a national tour and intend to bring the show to London and Los Angeles. "We had an amazing run here in NYC," said Smith in a statement. "I have worked on bringing Dusty to the New York stage for years and I am so grateful that my dream came true. I talked to hundreds of audience members and their passion and love for the show and for Dusty Springfield truly inspired me every night. I can't wait to do Forever Dusty again in the next city."
Vankin added, "We want to thank all of our fans who made it possible to have such an exciting experience in our five months at New World Stages. They are the reason we do this show! But none of it would have been possible without our beautiful, hugely talented cast and crew. Most of all, we give our thanks to the legendary Dusty Springfield. If more people know and love her now than before we started the show, then we have achieved what we set out to do."
Forever Dusty is produced by Jorja Fox, Leslie Brockett, Jane Gullong, and Sandalphon Productions, with Eva Price of Maximum Entertainment Productions executive producing. The creative team also includes Wilson Chin (set design), Richard DiBella (lighting design), Matt Kraus (sound design), Michael Thomas Murray (music direction), and Nancy Palmatier (costume design).
