Lotte Lenya, Kurt Weill, et al. Featured on Threepenny Opera: Songs (Original Historic Recordings)

Lotte Lenya and Kurt Weill are among the artists featured on Threepenny Opera: Songs (Original Historic Recordings). The two disc set will be released by Naxos on August 30.

One disc in the set is a sampling of recordings made of the popular Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht musical, primarily between 1928 and 1930. Nine tracks feature members of the original 1928 German cast of the show. Others extend to include period orchestral and piano arrangements of the show’s songs, as well as foreign language recordings including three from France made in 1931.

The second disc is a compilation of recordings of Weill’s music including seven from The Happy End, featuring Lenya delivering “Bilbao-Song,” two from The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, also performed by Lenya, and a set of six Weill songs arranged for piano, including two from Lost in the Stars, performed by Lenya and the composer.

Other performers on the disc include Ernst Busch, Odette Florelle, Lya Gauty, Kurt Gerron, Erika Helmke, Gerda Madsen, Carola Neher, Marianne Oswald, Otto Pasetti, Harald Paulsen, Alfred Schlee, Arthur Schroder, and Marek Weber.
