49th Annual Grammy Award Nominations Announced logo
Nominations for the 49th annual Grammy Awards were announced this morning. The awards will be given out on Sunday, February 11 in Los Angeles and broadcast live on CBS.

The nominees for Best Musical Show Album are The Color Purple, The Drowsy Chaperone, Jersey Boys, The Pajama Game, and Sweeney Todd.

Tony Award winner Mel Brooks was nominated for Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media for "There's Nothing Like a Show on Broadway" from the film version of The Producers. Another local funnyman, playwright and comedian Lewis Black was nominated for Best Comedy Album for The Carnegie Hall Performance.

The nominees for Best Traditional Pop Album are Tony Bennett for Duets: An American Classic, Michael Buble for Caught in the Act, Sarah McLachlan for Wintersong, Bette Midler for Bette Midler Sings the Peggy Lee Songbook, and Smokey Robinson for Timeless Love.

Tony winner, John Lithgow received a nomination for Best Children's Album for Sunny Side of the Street, while Jim Dale and Lynn Redgrave were both nominated for Best Children's Spoken Word Album for Peter Pan and The Witches respectively.

The late Ossie Davis and his wife Ruby Dee are among the nominees for Best Spoken Word Album for With Ossie and Ruby: In This Life Together. Their competitors include Bob Newhart, Bill Maher, Al Franken, and former U.S. president Jimmy Carter.
