The Who’s Pete Townshend is at work on a new musical about aging. On the singer-songwriter’s blog, he’s announced that the title of the show is Floss, and in it, “the songs are interspersed with surround-sound ‘soundscapes’ featuring complex sound-effects and musical montages.”

Floss focuses on a pub-rock musician and his troubled relationship with his wife, who runs a riding stable. Songs from the show will be featured on a new Who album due next year. The piece will be heard in concert for the first time in 2011, at a venue that will be announced at a later date.

Townshend’s previous rock operas Quadrophenia and Tommy started as albums and later became films and stage musicals.
