Queen of Basel, a Latinx Adaptation of Miss Julie, to Open at TheaterWorks Hartford

August Strindberg iconic play is set at Miami’s Art Basel.

TheaterWorks Hartford will present the New England Premiere of Queen of Basel, written by Hilary Bettis and directed by Cristina Angeles. The production is set to run from February 3-26, with performances streaming on demand from February 19-26.

Queen of Basel is an adaptation of August Strindberg's Miss Julie set within the Latinx community during Miami's Art Basel. The story is described as follows: "It's Miami's Art Basel, where real estate heiress Julie reigns over the blowout her mogul father is throwing at his South Beach hotel. But after tangling with him and a tray of drinks, Julie plots her next move in the hotel's storage kitchen with Christine, a waitress who recently fled violence in Venezuela, and Christine's fiancé John, an Uber driver with ambitions."

The cast of Queen of Basel features Silvia Dionicio as Christine, Kelvin Grullon as John, and Christine Spang as Julie.

The production;s creative team includes Rodrigo Escalante (set design), Harry Nadal (costume design), Emma Deane (lighting design), Germán Martínez (sound design), Lauren Kiele DeLeon (intimacy director), Iris Marcelina Zacarías (associate sound design), and Cynthia Santos DeCure (dialect coach).
