Chicago Broadcaster John Callaway Dies at 72

Emmy Award-winning broadcaster John Callaway, the father of Broadway stars Liz Callaway and Ann Hampton Callaway, died suddenly of a heart attack on June 23. He was 72 years old.

Callaway was one of Chicago’s best-known broadcast journalists, having worked for WBBM-TV and WTTW-TV, where he hosted the station’s nightly newscast for many years He was also the founder and host of Chicago Tonight for 15 years and later hosted The Friday Night Show, in which he interviewed politicians, authors, and television stars.

Callaway won more than 60 awards in his career, including seven Emmy Awards and the coveted Peabody Award.
