The Kennedy Center Will Expand, Adding Public Gardens and Rehearsal Space

David M. Rubenstein, Chairman of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, has announced plans to construct a new facility south of the Center’s current building. Steven Holl and his senior partner Chris McVoy of Steven Holl Architects will design the project.

The expansion is expected to cost approximately $100 million. Rubenstein has generously pledged to donate $50 million toward the design and construction of the new building. The Kennedy Center has begun a major fundraising campaign to procure the additional funds.

Mr. Holl’s initial concept for the project features three connected pavilions, which will house educational rooms, rehearsal rooms, and limited office space. One pavilion will float on the Potomac River and provide an outdoor stage. Public gardens will line the space, and an outdoor video wall, which can be used to simulcast performances, will be offered.

With Rubenstein’s $50 million lead gift, the Kennedy Center hopes to raise an additional $125 million. $50 million will fund the expansion project, and $25 million will go to future programming initiatives.
