Brent Carver will play the lead role of John Merrick in the Canadian Stage Company’s production of Bernard Pomerance’s The Elephant Man, to be directed by Robin Phillips. The show will run October 8-November 3.

Based on real-life events, the play chronicles Merrick’s journey from the seedy and sordid voyeurism of Victorian London to the elegant world of British aristocracy, where he becomes a cherished celebrity.

Carver won a Tony for his performance in Kiss of the Spider Woman, and was also Tony-nominated for Parade. He played Gandalf in the world premiere of the musical version of Lord of the Rings, and appeared in CanStage’s production of The Story of My Life last year.

The cast will also feature Geraint Wyn Davies, Kate Trotter, Barry MacGregor, Michael Spencer-Davis, Michelle Fisk, David Kirby, Aaron Forward, and Jack Wetherall.
