David Thompson will write the book for the piece, which will celebrate and re-examine material from Prince's theater career, drawing on songs from some of the musicals in which he has been involved, such as A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Cabaret, Company, Damn Yankees, Fiorello!, Follies, Fiddler on the Roof, It's a Bird... It's a Plane... It's Superman, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Merrily We Roll Along, Parade, She Loves Me, and Sweeney Todd.
Prince has won more Tony Awards than anyone else, 21. Among his other honors is a 2000 National Medal of Arts, which was bestowed in recognition of his career in which "he changed the nature of the American musical." Additionally, he was a 1994 Kennedy Center Honoree.
The production will also include scenic and projection design by Jerome Sirlin, costume design by William Ivey Long, lighting design by Howell Binkley, and sound design by Peter Hylenski. Jason Robert Brown will write vocal and dance arrangements, orchestrations will be by Don Sebesky, and Eric Stern will serve as musical director.
