Aladdin and his magic carpet will play a pre-Broadway engagement this fall at Toronto’s Ed Mirvish Theater. The musical will run November 13 through January 14, 2014 before opening on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre in 2014, as previously reported.

Adapted from centuries-old Arabian folktales, Aladdin will feature a full Broadway score including songs from the film. Aladdin tells the story of a street urchin who falls in love with a princess and, after encountering a genie, uses three wishes to pursue her love and defeat the villainous Jafar. The animated film Aladdin was released by Disney in 1992 and was a critical and box office smash. The film won the Oscars for Best Original Score and Original Song for “A Whole New World.”

An entirely new production from the one that debuted in Seattle in 2011, the show will feature music by Tony Award winner Alan Menken (Newsies), lyrics by the late Tony Award nominee Howard Ashman (Little Shop of Horrors), Tony Award winner Tim Rice (Aida) and Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin (Elf), with a book by Beguelin. Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (Book of Mormon) will direct and choreograph. The design team includes Tony Award-winning scenic designer Bob Crowley, Tony Award-winning lighting designer Natasha Katz, Tony Award-winning costume designer Gregg Barnes and sound designer Ken Travis. The production team also includes illusion designer Jim Steinmeyer and hair designer Josh Marquette. The music team is headed by music supervisor and music director Michael Kosarin, who will also create the vocal and incidental music arrangements, joined by orchestrator Danny Troob and dance music arranger Glen Kelly. Casting has not yet been announced.
