Stephen King and John Mellencamp’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County Part of Alliance Theatre’s 2011-2012 Season
The Alliance Theatre has announced additions to its 2011-2012 season, which will conclude with the world premiere of John Mellencamp and Stephen King’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County (April 4 – May 13, 2012), directed by Susan V. Booth and featuring music direction by T. Bone Burnett. The Southern Gothic tuner, based on a true story, centers a man attempting to tell the truth about a tragedy that took the lives of two brothers and a young woman.
The piece will be staged on the Alliance Stage at the Woodruff Arts Center, as will the theater’s opening production, the previously reported revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s exploration of famed fairy tales and the nature of “happily ever after”, Into the Woods (August 31 – October 2), also directed by Booth. Also scheduled for this theater are Scott Schwartz’s staging of William Gibson’s portrait of Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, Golda’s Balcony (October 12 – November 5), starring Tovah Feldshuh; and Yasmina Reza’s look at two couples’ battle over their sons’ playground argument, God of Carnage (January 11 – February 6), to be directed by Kent Gash.
On the Hertz Stage, the company will produce Janece Shaffer’s dark comedy about joblessness in contemporary America, Broke (September 23 – October 23); Kirk Hanley and Maribeth Monroe’s exploration of relationships in the age of social media, Sex and The Second City (November 11 – December 18); Meg Miroshnik’s look at a young American woman looking for her roots in Moscow, The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls (February 3-26); and Stephen Jeffreys’ portrait of an older musician at a crossroads in his life and career, I Just Stopped By to See the Man (March 9 – April 8), to be directed by Ron OJ Parson.
During the coming season, the theater will also produce David H. Bell’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, to run November 25 – December 24, directed by Rosemary Newcott; and two pieces in its family series, The Real Teenagers of Atlanta (October 29 – November 13) and The Wizard of Oz (February 25 – March 11).
