A.C.T. Acquires The Strand Theater

A.C.T. has purchased the Strand Theater, a historic cinema in San Francisco’s Central Market area that has been closed since 2006.

The new space will give A.C.T. a place in which to produce and present new work and new artists. Plans for the Strand include a 300-seat theater, a mixed-use space for classrooms, rehearsals, and cabaret performances, and a small restaurant. Renovation is to begin in spring of 2013 with a target opening date in late fall of 2014.

The purchase of the Strand was financed through a gift by A.C.T. Board Member Jeff Ubben and his wife Laurie Ubben and comes directly following A.C.T.’s opening of a small performance space called The Costume Shop on nearby Market Street.
