The open house will feature backstage tours, costume displays, sword fighting demonstrations, bagpipes, and Elizabethan dances. In addition, there will be a presentation of scenes from the theater's current season of Shakespeare Festival plays, which will be performed by the repertory company in the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre at 11:45am. For young people, the open house will have special crafts, face painting, and circus performances by Lindley Lopez Productions.
Shakespeare was first produced at the Globe in 1935 as part of the California Pacific International Exposition and has been central to the Globe's mission since that time. During the two years of the Exposition, the Globe presented abbreviated versions of Shakespeare's plays performed in repertory.
The Old Globe's 75th season of Shakespeare in Balboa Park will include King Lear (June 12 - Sept. 23), The Taming of the Shrew (June 16 - Sept. 26), and The Madness of George III (June 19 - Sept. 24).
