Tony winner Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show) will return to the stage in the New York premiere of Tarell Alvin McCraney's Head of Passes, set to play the Public Theater beginning March 15. Tina Landau directs the production, which opens March 28.

Rashad, last seen on the New York stage in the 2008 Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, will head the company as Shelah, a woman who "must fight to survive the rising flood of life's great challenges" as her family and friends come to celebrate her birthday. The nine-person cast will also include Alana Arenas (Cookie), Francois Battiste (Aubrey), Kyle Beltran (Crier), and J. Bernard Calloway (Spencer).

Head of Passes features scenic design by G.W. Mercier, costume design by Toni-Leslie James, lighting design by Jeff Croiter, sound design by Rob Milburn and Michael Bodeen, and hair and wig design by Robert-Charles Vallance.

Rashad last appeared at the Public in Tracey Scott Wilson's The Story in 2003. McCraney's works include Choir Boy, The Brother/Sister Plays, and Wig Out!, among others.
