Joseguillermo Cortines to Join Off-Broadway’s La Barbería

Joseguillermo Cortines will join the Off-Broadway company of David Maldonado and Ari Maniel Cruz’s La Barbería (The Barbershop), at New World Stages, beginning with the Monday, April 11 performance. He replaces Manny Perez in the role of Beny. Waddys Jáquez has directed the production.

This Spanglish comedic drama is set against a score of original contemporary Latin music emanating from the airwaves, and centers on Beny Acevedo, landlord and proprietor of a bustling Washington Heights barbershop. When he gets a multi-million dollar offer to sell his building, he faces the toughest decision of his life.

The cast also includes Mateo Gomez, Ruperto Vanderpool, Modesto Lacen, Sunilda Caraballo, Ivan Camilo, Graciany Miranda, Juan Carlos Diaz and Emme Bonilla. La Barbería is directed by Waddys Jaquez.

The creative team is comprised of Raul Abrego (sets), Sarah Sidman (lights), Hochi Asiatico (costumes) and David Lawson (sound).

Cortines has worked extensively in theater and television in his native Dominican Republic, with roles including that of Marius in Les Misérables, at the National Theatre in Santo Domingo.
