Philadelphia Kids Spotlight: May '06

What do you get when you take classic fairy tales and turn them on their head? According to The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, the Ugly Duckling grows up to be A Really Ugly Duck, Cinderella snubs Rumpelstiltskin, and the Princess kisses a frog only to end up with a mouthful of slime. Arden Theatre Company presents this show for all ages, based on the book by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith, adapted by John Glore, and directed by Whit MacLaughlin.
LA Kids Spotlight: May '06

Family fare this month includes the new musical The Empress and Her New Clothes (continuing through May 28 at Burbank's Falcon Theatre), set in the world of fashion design, and involving an empress who goes undercover, finding that a pushy girl has a sneaky trick up her sleeve. Finally, Burbank's Media City Ballet presents Hansel and Gretel (Glendale's Alex Theatre, May 13 & 14), based on the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale, and set to the music of Richard Strauss and others.
D.C. Metro Kids Spotlight: May '06
Bethesda's Imagination Stage has a world premiere for kids four and older. The Hundred Dresses (May 13 to June 11) is adapted by local playwright Mary Hall Surface from the Eleanor Estes book set in the Depression. Here, Maddie joins the other kids in teasing Wanda, the only Polish girl in school, for claiming she has 100 dresses. They don't believe her because she only wears one worn-out dress. But Maddie comes to regret her behavior and the loss of a potential friendship.

Emerald City presents Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book, adapted by the award-winning team of Steve Goers and Alyn Cardarelli. The show tells the story of Mowgli, a baby lost in the jungle. Sponsored by a panther and adopted by a family of wolves, Mowgli grows up with cobras, jackals, monkeys and bears. Oh my!
