On Tuesday, October 25, New York City’s historic City Center officially reopened its doors following a historic renovation and modernization. The renovation, designed by Ennead Architects, LLP has transformed the landmark building into a contemporary cultural center complete with modern amenities and enhanced historic details, from the mezzanine lobby’s painted ceiling and murals to the auditorium’s arabesque dome.
In addition to a cocktail reception and dinner, the gala featured a star-studded performance directed by Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall. Mayor Bloomberg began the proceedings by conducting the Encores! Orchestra, under the direction of Rob Berman, in the national anthem.
The evening’s participants included Joshua Bell, Alexander Bernstein, Robert Battle, Matthew Broderick, Rob Fisher, Denyce Graves, Patti LuPone, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Donna Murphy, Sarah Jessica Parker, Brian Williams, Linda Celeste Sims and Matthew Rushing of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Wendy Whelan and Ask la Cour of New York City Ballet, and the Encores! Chorus.
Guests at the event include news anchor Maurice DuBois, Broadway star Norm Lewis, film actress Isabella Rossellini, and Mayor Bloomberg’s companion, Diana Taylor.
