FringeNYC Announces Excellence Awards, Encores Series

The 2009 recipients for FringeNYC’s Overall Excellence Awards were announced last night at the closing night party for the New York international Fringe Festival, held at The Gramercy Theater.

Outstanding Play awards went to Viral, Abraham Lincoln’s Big Gay Dance Party, and Devil Boys From Beyond, while Outstanding Musical was awarded to Mom – A Rock Concert Musical and Citizen Ruth. Playwriting awards were also given to Jason Schafer (Notes on the Land of Earthquake & Fire), Laura Schellhardt (The K of D), and Mary Adkins (The 49 Project).

Acting awards were given to Alyson Weaver (La Ronde), Autumn Hurlbert (A Contemporary American’s Guide to a Successful Marriage), Ethan Downing (Confirmation), Colin DePaula (Mutti’s After Supper Stories), and Ken Barnett (La Ronde). In addition, ensemble awards went to the shows Two on the Aisle, Three in the Van, Powerhouse, Ether Steeds, and
Bargains and Blood (How To Succeed in Home Shopping!)

Outstanding Solo Show awards were given to Art’s Heart, The Event, The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer, Remission, Truth Values: One Girl’s Romp Through MIT’s Male Math Maze, Jesus Ride, and The Songs of Robert, and awards for Outstanding Unique Theatrical Event went to Bullettrun, 666, and Baby Wants Candy.

Directing awards were given to Ben West (How Now, Dow Jones), Patrick McNulty (Harold Pinter Pair), Jeremy Dobrish (Dancing with Abandon), and Bill Oliver (A History of Cobbling). Choreography awards went to Jody Oberfelder for 38 Witnessed Her Death, I Witnessed Her Love: The Lonely Secret of Mary Ann Zielonko (Kitty Genovese Story) and Patricia Norwol for Circuits. Outstanding Costume Design was awarded to Lisa Zinni (A Contemporary American’s Guide to a Successful Marriage and Luke Brown (The Doctor and the Devils), while an award for Outstanding Set Design was given to Szu-Feng Chen (The Alchemist of Light).

In addition, selections have also been announced for the 2009 Fringe Encores Series, to run in repertory, September 10-26 at the Soho Playhouse and the Actors’ Playhouse. The shows to be presented are And Sophie Comes Too, The Boys Upstairs, Complete, A Contemporary American’s Guide to a Successful Marriage c. 1959, Devil Boys From Beyond, Dolls, His Greatness, I Can Has Cheezburger: The MusicLOL!, Jesus Ride, The K of D, an urban legend, MoM–A Rock Concert Musical, Muffin Man, Notes on the Land of Earthquake and Fire, Powerhouse, Sex and the Holy Land, Tales from the Tunnel, terranova, Viral, Willy Nilly: A Musical Exploration of the Most Far-Out Cult Murders of the Psychedelic Era, Zipperface: The Hobo Musical, as well as Singin’ Wid a Sword in Ma Han’, which won the TheaterMania.com FringeNYC Audience Favorite Award.
