Playwright David Davalos and journalist Retta Blaney are the recipients of 2011 “The Lights are Bright on Broadway” Awards, which are presented annually by Masterwork Productions, Inc. to individuals and organizations making a difference in the Broadway community through faith.

Davalos is being honored for his play Wittenberg, produced earlier this year Off-Broadway by Pearl Theatre Company. The work is a witty battle of wills and philosophies between Dr. Faustus and Martin Luther as they attempt to influence star pupil Hamlet at 16th-century Wittenberg University.

Blaney is a journalist, theater critic, blogger, and author of the book, Working on the Inside: The Spiritual Life through the Eyes of Actors, featuring interviews with such stars as Kristin Chenoweth, Edward Herrmann, Liam Neeson, Phylicia Rashad, and Vanessa Williams who discuss their faith. In addition, she directs the annual Broadway Blessing, a free interfaith service at St. John the Divine Cathedral. Her award will be presented at this year’s service on Monday, September 12.
