Actress Elzbieta Czyzewska Dies at 72

Actress Elzbieta Czyzewska has died of esophageal cancer, according to a report in The New York Times. She was 72 years old

Before emigrating to the U.S., Czyzewska was one of the most popular actresses in Poland, and starred there in a notable production of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons.

Her early stage credits in this country included a production of Albert Camus’ The Possessed at Yale Rep, which also featured Meryl Streep and Christopher Durang, as well as the original production of Janusz Glowacki’s Hunting Cockroaches. More recently. Czyzewska appeared in Ivo Von Hove’s Hedda Gabler and Martha Clarke’s Vienna: Lusthaus (revisited), both at New York Theatre Workshop.

She appeared in such films as Putney Swope, Running on Empty, Cadillac Man and A Kiss Before Dying. Her television credits include Sex and the City, Third Watch, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Damages.

Her marriage to author David Halberstam ended in divorce.
