Jazz Pianist and Ain’t Misbehavin’ Music Director Hank Jones Dies at 91

Jazz pianist Hank Jones died on Sunday, May 16, at a hospice in the Bronx, according to The New York Times. He was 91.

Jones had a long and varied career, performing with such greats as Ella Fitzgerald, working as a studio musician on radio and television, and also recording regularly either on his own or as the leader of a trio. In 1978, Jones became the musical director and onstage pianist for the original Broadway run of Ain’t Misbehavin’ and his work can be heard on the cast recording.

Jones received a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement in 2009, with other honors including being named a National Endowment for the Arts jazz master in 1989, and receiving the National Medal of Arts in 2008.

Jones is survived by his wife, Theodosia. His two younger brothers, trumpeter Thad Jones and drummer Elvin Jones, both predeceased him.
