AP Theater Critic Michael Kuchwara Dies at 63; Broadway to Dim Lights in His Honor May 25

Michael Kuchwara, who was the Associated Press’ theater critic for over 25 years,
died at Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan on Saturday, May 22 of complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease that causes scarring. He was 63 years old.

The marquees of Broadway theaters in New York will be dimmed in his memory on Tuesday, May 25, at exactly 7pm for one minute.

Kuchwara’s reviews appeared in thousands of newspapers and websites around the country. He was a member of the New York Drama Critics Circle, of which he was a former president, among many other professional organizations.

“Michael touched so many of you, his friends, family and business associates. Your outpouring of love and support these last days and weeks were a great comfort to Michael and to his family. We will miss him dearly and these next few days will be challenging, but we know that Michael is without pain and at rest,” Kuchwara’s family said in a written statement.
