La MaMa will be hosting the New York City premiere of Theatre Y’s I Killed My Mother from February 10 to March 4 at the Ellen Stewart Theatre.

I Killed My Mother tells the story of a Romanian Roma (gypsy) girl whose mother abandons her after birth. With the help of her childhood soul-mate she learns to navigate the harsh realities of her existence and to excise parasitic relationships, to “kill,” to turn her back forever even on the maternal bond, in order to discover her own extraordinary identity.

The cast includes Theatre Y members Melissa Hawkins (Bernadette) and Andrew Livingston (Clip).

Written by Romanian playwright András Visky and directed by Karin Coonrod, I Killed My Mother recently won the Special Award at the Romanian Minorities Festival.
