Obie Award winner Taylor Mac (The Lily’s Revenge) will head the cast of The Foundry Theatre’s upcoming production of Bertolt Brecht’s Good Person of Szechwan, to be presented February 1-24 at La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre.

Lear deBessonet (On the Levee) directs the drama, which follows Shen Tei (Mac), a woman from a poor neighborhood who is rewarded for her inherent goodness with money from the gods to buy a tobacco shop. But when the shop begins to fail because of her kindness, she is forced to disguise herself as Sui Ta, a ruthless businessman.

The cast will also include Obie Award winner and Tony Award nominee Lisa Kron (Well) as Mrs. Mi Tzu/Mrs. Yang, David Turner (On a Clear Day…) as Wang, the Waterseller, Kate Benson as Mrs. Shin, Brooke Ishibashi as The Woman, Paul Juhn as Mr. Shu Fu, and Annie Golden (Hair), Vinie Burrows, and Mia Katigbak as the Gods. Casting for two additional roles will be announced shortly.

The creative team includes Anne Erbe (dramaturg), Tyler Micoleau (lighting design), Clint Ramos (costume design), Matt Saunders (scenic design), and Brandon Walcott (sound design). César Alvarez and The Lisps will provide original live music.

Mac’s many credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Walk Across America for Mother Earth, and The Lily’s Revenge. The Foundry Theatre was established in 1994 to support a community of artists with revolutionary ideas for theater and the world. The company has been the recipient of nine Obie Awards as well as three Drama Desk nominations for Unique Theatrical Experience.
