Cheers Star George Wendt to Return to Broadway in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Everybody knows his name – but this time, it won’t be Norm.

Six-time Emmy Award nominee George Wendt, best known for his role on the long-running sitcom Cheers, will return to the stage this spring as Joe Bell in the upcoming stage production of Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

The play, directed by Sean Mathias and adapted by Tony Award winner Richard Greenberg (Take Me Out), begins previews at the Cort Theatre on March 4 in advance of a March 20 opening. As previously announced, Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke will lead the company as Holly Golightly, with off-Broadway actor Cory Michael Smith (The Whale) as the writer Fred. Additional casting will be announced in the near future.

Wendt was most recently seen on the New York stage in Re-Animator The Musical. His Broadway credits include Elf, Hairspray, and Art. In addition to Cheers, his many television credits include The George Wendt Show, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and Hot in Cleveland.

Greenberg’s stage version will be adapted from Capote’s 1958 novella, which was subsequently turned into the beloved 1961 film starring Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard, Mickey Rooney, and Patricia Neal. The playwright’s other works include Three Days of Rain, The American Plan, and Evening Standard. His newest play, The Assembled Parties, will open on Broadway in April at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.
