Even Pulitzer Prize winners lose, sometimes. In the quickest exit of a new work by a big-name playwright in several seasons, The Broadway production of David Mamet's prison-drama The Anarchist at John Golden Theatre will close on December 16, after only 17 regular performances.

The Pultizer Prize-winning playwright's two-hander, which he also directed, features Patti LuPone (Gypsy) as Cathy, a former revolutionary who wants to be released from prison after 35 years, and Debra Winger (Terms of Endearment) as Ann, the prison official who must decide Cathy's fate. The creative team includes Patrizia Von Brandenstein (set and costumes) and Jeff Croiter (lighting).

LuPone has won Tony Awards for her performances in Evita and Gypsy. Among her other Broadway credits are The Robber Bridegroom, Master Class, The Old Neighborhood, Anything Goes, Sweeney Todd, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. She most recently hit Broadway in the theatrical concert An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin.

Winger's previous stage credits include How I Learned to Drive and Ivanov at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts and The Exonerated in New York. She is best known for her film work, including her Oscar-nominated performances in An Officer and A Gentleman, Terms of Endearment, and Shadowlands.
