The New Group will present The Fever, written and performed by Wallace Shawn, at the Acorn Theatre at Theatre Row, January 9-March 3. The production, to be directed by Scott Elliott, will open officially on January 24.

In The Fever, an anonymous narrator wakes up in a war-torn country with a terrible fever, unable to reconcile the privilege he has enjoyed with his current surroundings. Shawn’s plays The Music Teacher, co-written with his brother Allen, and Aunt Dan & Lemon were previously presented by The New Group; in addition, Shawn co-starred in the company’s revival of David Rabe’s Hurlyburly.

His other writing credits include the plays The Designated Mourner and Marie and Bruce, and the film My Dinner With André. As an actor, Shawn recently appeared in The 24 Hour Plays on Broadway, and he has been seen in numerous films and television shows including Manhattan, Clueless, and Murphy Brown.

Elliott is the artistic director of The New Group. His many credits include the Broadway productions of The Threepenny Opera, Barefoot in the Park, The Women, and The Three Sisters; for The New Group, he has directed such shows as The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Abigail’s Party, and Hurlyburly.
