What Makes Sammy Run?, Chocolate Solider, The Zulu and Zayda Recordings to Be Released Digitally and as Disc-On-Demand

Masterworks Broadway has announced the second trio of cast recordings that will be made available through digital services and as discs-on-demand. These soon-to-be-available titles are part of the company’s ongoing efforts to reissue works using the original masters from the Sony Archive on a monthly basis. In most instances, these will be the first authorized releases of these recordings in the digital era.

On October 19, the company will reissue the Grammy-nominated What Makes Sammy Run?. The musical version of Budd Schulberg’s classic Hollywood novel opened in 1964 featuring Steve Lawrence, who earned a Tony Award nomination in his Broadway debut, costarring with Robert Alda and Sally Ann Howes.

Lehman Engel’s 1958 studio recording of Oscar Straus’ The Chocolate Soldier, an adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s Arms and the Man, featuring opera legends Risë Stevens and Robert Merrill, plus Broadway stars Peter Palmer and Jo Sullivan, will be released on November 16.

Harold Rome’s The Zulu and Zayda will be available on December 7. The musical is set in South Africa and imagines a burgeoning friendship between a sociable old Jewish grandfather and a native. The company includes Menasha Skulnik, Louis Gossett Jr., Ossie Davis, and Yaphet Kotto.

Masterworks Broadway has also announced the line-up of recently out-of-print recordings which it is making available every week through all major digital service providers. Among the titles in this series are Peter Allen’s Making Every Moment Count (November 2); Harolyn Blackwell’s Strange Hurt (November 16), the original Off-Broadway cast recording of Weird Romance (November 30), and Johnny Mathis’ Ballads of Broadway / Rhythms of Broadway (December 7).

In addition, the company will complete its releases of the Celebrate Broadway series, with the release of Beautiful Girls (November 9), Kids! (November 23), Duets (December 14), Gotta Dance (December 21), and Tony Winners (December 28).
