Leonardo DiCaprio is set to co-produce and star in a film version of Beau Willimon’s play Farragut North, according to Variety. The trade paper also reports that George Clooney may direct the film.

Farragut North, which concerns a young communications director for a presidential candidate who falls prey to the trickery of rival politicians, was originally announced to be part of Second Stage Theatre’s current season, but is no longer on the slate. Previous published reports have stated that the play will come to Broadway in 2008, with Mike Nichols possibly directing and Jake Gyllenhaal considering the lead role.

Willimon’s other plays including Baby Blue, Nobody’s Child, Breathing Time, and Lower Ninth, which was produced as part of the 2007 Summer Play Festival.
