Danny’s Skylight Room, Piano Bar, and Restaurant to Shutter in January

The management of Danny’s Grand Sea Palace at 346 West 46th Street has announced that the restaurant’s piano bar and its cabaret space, Danny’s Skylight Room, will close permanently following a gala New Year’s Eve party on December 31, 2006. The restaurant itself will remain open through January 6, 2007. No reason for the closing was given.

The Skylight Room has presented more than 15,000 shows — an average of 16 per week — since it opened in 1985. In recent years, the venue has been home to the legendary jazz singer/pianist Blossom Dearie, who performed there regularly. The long list of notables who have appeared in the room also includes Dakota Staton, Joyce Breach, Maude Maggart, Barbara Brussell, Richard Rodney Bennett, KT Sullivan, Mark Nadler, Eric Comstock, Barbara Fasano, Phillip Officer, Wesla Whitfield, Claiborne Cary, John Wallowitch, and Brett Somers.

Among those who have entertained in the piano bar for lengthy stints are Jerry Scott, Joe Regan, Rick Leonard, Benny Martini, Charles DeForest, and Danny Apolinar.
