Masterworks Broadway Releases 25 Disc Broadway in a Box Collection

Masterworks Broadway has released Broadway in a Box: The Essential Broadway Musicals Collection, a collection of 25 cast albums spanning four decades.

Among the discs included in the set are the original cast recordings of Annie, Cabaret, Camelot, Chicago, A Chorus Line, Company, Fiddler on the Roof, Gypsy, Hair, Hello, Dolly! , How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Into the Woods, My Fair Lady, Oliver!, The Sound of Music, South Pacific, and West Side Story, along with highlights from the original Broadway cast album of Sweeney Todd.

Additionally the set features revival cast recordings of Anything Goes from 1987, Guys and Dolls from 1992, Man of La Mancha from 2003, and Oklahoma! from 1979, along with discs featuring the Music Theater of Lincoln Center companies of Carousel, The King and I and Show Boat.

In addition to the cast recordings, the set includes many extra features: Kander & Ebb’s demo recordings for Cabaret; Ethel Merman singing alternate lyrics to “Some People” from Gypsy; recordings from German and Swedish productions of The Sound of Music; numbers cut from shows during tryouts; conversations and interviews with artists such as Jule Styne, Rex Harrison, and Julie Andrews; and Martin Charnin and Charles Strouse giving the first public performance of “Tomorrow.”

Each individual disc is packaged in its own full-color mini-sleeve featuring the original album cover art. A 64-page companion booklet contains liner notes by Peter Filichia, historical photos of many of the original productions, and for each show an introduction, cast list, list of musical numbers, and awards.
