Playwright Arnold Weinstein Dies at 78

Arnold Weinstein, a noted playwright, librettist, and lyricist best known for his work with composer William Bolcom, died on September 4 in New York City from liver cancer, according to The New York Times.

Weinstein collaborated with Bolcom on numerous cabaret and theater songs, as well as numerous operas, including McTeague, Casino Paradise, A Wedding (based on the film by Robert Altman), and most notably, A View from the Bridge, based on the famed Arthur Miller play.

His theatrical works included the 1971 Broadway production of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, which starred Valerie Harper, Melinda Dillon, Paul Sand, and Mary Frann, and the Off-Broadway plays The Red Eye of Love and Dynamite Tonite.

Weinstein was married and divorced three times. He is survived by his sister Gloria and four nieces.
