Jean-Claude van Itallie to Bring Confessions and Conversation to La MaMa

Playwright and performer Jean-Claude van Itallie will bring his newest work, Confessions and Conversation to La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre for four performances, September 20-23. The work is directed by Rosemary Quinn.

In the piece, van Itallie discusses his life as an Off-Off-Broadway artist in 1960s New York City, his lovers, and his friendship with La MaMa founder Ellen Stewart, who served as his mentor and “mama.” He will be accompanied by pianist Kevin Hourigan.

Plays by van Itallie include American Hurrah (popularized once again this year on AMC’s Mad Men, The Serpent, Tibetan Book of the Dead, and War, Sex and Dreams. Quinn originated roles in productions with Mabou Mines and The Talking Band, and has performed in many of van Itallie’s plays.
