Jazz Singer and Actress Abbey Lincoln Dies at 80

Abbey Lincoln, a noted jazz singer, actress, and activist, has died at age 80 in New York City, according to The New York Times.

Lincoln’s many albums included Affair … a Story of a Girl in Love, That’s Him, The World is Falling Down, and Abbey Sings Abbey. In 2003, she received the National Endowment for the Arts NEA Jazz Masters Award.

She also appeared in such films as The Girl Can’t Help It, Nothing But a Man, and For the Love of Ivy, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She also made guest appearances on such television shows as All in the Family, Marcus Welby, M.D., and The Name of the Game.

Lincoln was married to the drummer Max Roach, but the union ended in divorce. She is survived by her siblings, Donald, Kenneth, and Juanita.
