Off-Broadway Musical Fame Announces Open Call

It has just been announced that open auditions for the upcoming Off-Broadway production of the musical Fame will be held at the Little Shubert Theatre (422 West 42nd Street, between Ninth and Tenth avenues) on Wednesday, August 27, beginning at 9am.

The production seeks performers aged 16-25, including on-stage musicians, ensemble members (dancers who can sing and singers who can dance), and principal characters. Male violinists, male trumpet players, male guitarists, and female drummers are especially encouraged to attend.

Performers of all heights, levels of experience, and ethnicities are sought and no union affiliation is required. Each auditionee should bring a résumé and picture or snapshot, wear comfortable shoes, and be prepared to stay for the whole day.

Conceived and developed by David De Silva, Fame has a book by José Fernandez, lyrics by Jacques Levy, and music by Steve Margoshes; the famous title song of the film version, also included in the score, was written by Dean Pitchford and Michael Gore. The New York production will be directed by Drew Scott Harris and choreographed by Lars Bethke, with set design by Norbert Kolb, lighting design by Ken Billington, and costume design by Paul Tazewell.

The show is scheduled to begin previews on Tuesday, October 7 and to open officially on November 11. Set in the 1980s at the High School for Performing Arts, the musical follows the school’s students on a quest for professional — and personal — success, from their freshman year to their graduation into the real world.
