Love and Magic Spark Boomerang Theatre Company’s Fall 2002 Season

Beginning September 18, The Boomerang Theatre Company will offer “a season of love and magic” via three distinct plays that each incorporate elements of fantasy, to be presented in rotating repertory.

Opening first is Eric Overmyer’s post-modern adaptation of the Molière comedy Amphitryon, about sexual congress between the god Jupiter and a beautiful mortal woman that is interrupted when the woman’s husband returns from the war. The Actors Playground production will be directed by Rachel Wood and will be performed September 18-29.

A classic childhood nightmare is the basis of The Monster Tales, billed as “An Adult Fable” by Mary Jett Parsley. Boomerang will offer the NYC premiere of this play about a lonely young woman named Mimi who discovers a monster under her bed — but this monster turns out to be a benevolent creature who helps Mimi realize the special gift she has inside her. Director Amy Henault describes the piece as “a fantasy about a creative awakening.” The Monster Tales will run September 20-October 5.

The last entry in Boomerang’s Fall 2002 season will be a new production of Craig Lucas’s Prelude to a Kiss, about a moribund old man who wills that his soul be exchanged with that of a young bride and who then refuses to relinquish possession of the woman’s body. Directed by Sarah Gurfield, Prelude will play September 25-October 6.

Now in its fourth year, the not-for-profit Boomerang Theatre Company received a 2002 OOBR “Favorite Production” Award for its staging of Molière’s The Misanthrope in 2001. This summer, Boomerang produced Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost in various parks throughout New York City.

The company’s upcoming slate of shows will be presented at The Actors Playground, 412 Eighth Avenue at 31st Street, 2nd Floor. All tickets are $15.00.
