Anna D. Shapiro, who won the Tony Award for directing August: Osage County, will helm Stephen Adly Guirgis’ The Motherf**ker with the Hat, which will be co-produced by the The Public Theater and the LAByrinth Theatre Company in Spring, 2011.

As previously reported, the Pubic’s 55th Anniversary Season will begin with New York premiere of the Elevator Repair Service’s Gatz (September 26-October 31), in which 13 actors bring every word of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby to the stage in a two-part, 6 1/2-hour theatrical event. There will be a special benefit performance of the show on September 25.

Up next will be the New York premiere of Lisa Kron’s In the Wake (October 19 – November 21). Leigh Silverman will direct this piece, which centers on a freelance writer and her friends as they try to make sense of the contested presidential election of 2000.

At the end of 2010, the Public, as previously reported, will present the New York premiere of The Tricycle Theatre Company’s acclaimed production of The Great Game: Afghanistan (November 30 – December 19). This political and theatrical event explores Afghanistan’s culture and history in three parts, over three separate evenings.

In the new year, the theater will produce Rinne Groff’s Compulsion (February 1 – March 6), directed by Oskar Eustis in addition to the previously announced The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures (March 22 – June 12), by Tony Kushner and directed by Michael Greif.
