Legally Blonde To Open at Palace Theater on April 29

The new Broadway musical Legally Blonde will land at Broadway’s Palace Theater on April 3, with an official opening on April 29. The show will first play San Francisco’s Orpheum Theater, January 23-February 25.

The musical is based on the popular 2001 movie about Elle Woods, a determined if seemingly ditzy college student who decides to become the first member of her sorority to attend Harvard Law School. While producers have not confirmed any casting, Laura Bell Bundy, who starred as Amber in the original Broadway cast of Hairspray, is reportedly set to play Elle. (Reese Witherspoon played the role in the film and its sequel, Legally Blonde 2.)

The show will mark the Broadway directing debut of Tony Award-winning choreographer Jerry Mitchell, who will also choreograph. Legally Blonde has a score by Nell Benjamin and Laurence O’Keefe, and a book by Heather Hach. The production will feature set design by David Rockwell, costume design by Gregg Barnes, lighting design by Kenneth Posner, sound design by ACME Sound Partners, and musical direction by Alex Lacamoire.

Mitchell’s Broadway credits include La Cage aux Folles, Hairspray, Gypsy, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Benjamin and O’Keefe wrote the scores for Sarah, Plain and Tall and Cam Jensen; in addition, O’Keefe wrote the music and lyrics for Bat Boy The Musical. Hach wrote the screenplay for the remake of Freaky Friday.
