At a time when state and local governments across the country are cutting the budgets of local arts agencies, the Santa Monica City Council has voted to give a $75,000 grant to the Santa Monica Playhouse.
The unanimous vote was a welcome gift to the theater, which has been in danger of closing down. The money will go toward helping the Playhouse reach its funding goal of $450,000, the amount needed for the 40-year old institution to finally purchase the downtown complex that it has been renting all these years.
Since December, friends and supporters of the Playhouse--the oldest continuously producing theater company in Santa Monica--have raised $40,000. The $75,000 grant from the city will push them closer to their goal but there is still much more money to raise and only a year to do it.
