Playwright and Director Doric Wilson Has Died

Playwright and director Doric Wilson has died in New York City. He was 72.

Wilson was the first resident playwright at the Caffe Cino in Greenwich Village. Among the plays that Wilson premiered at this legendary venue are his first play, And He Made A Her, a feminist take on Adam and Eve, as well as Pretty People and Now She Dances!.

His other plays include Street Theatre, In Absence, Turnabout, The West Street Gang, A Perfect Relationship, and Forever After.

In addition, he was a seminal figure in the world of gay theater and a gay rights activist. In 1974, he co-founded TOSOS (The Other Side of Silence), the first professional theatre company dedicated to work with openly with gay subject matter, which produced works by Noel Coward, Joe Orton, Terrence McNally, and Lanford Wilson.
