The New School for Drama has named two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello as the distinguished artist-in-residence for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Mantello is currently represented on Broadway for his direction of the musical Wicked. He received Tony Awards for his productions of Assassins and Take Me Out, along with Tony nominations for helming Glengarry Glen Ross and Love! Valour! Compassion!, and for acting in Angels in America: Millennium Approaches.

Mantello is the fifth artist-in-residence at the school. This residency provides students the opportunity to work with luminaries in the fields of playwriting, directing, and acting. Mantello will teach a year-long course on directing and will address the school in a town hall meeting where he will speak of his directing experiences and answer questions.

Past New School artists-in-residence include Jon Robin Baitz, John Turturro, Doug Hughes, and John Patrick Shanley.
