Coast of Utopia, Spring Awakening Top Drama Desk Awards

The 2007 Drama Desk Awards, which honor the best of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway, were presented on May 20 at F.H. LaGuardia Concert Hall. The event, which was hosted by Kristin Chenoweth, was webcast live by TheaterMania; it will be telecast by PBS on Sunday, May 27 at 12:30pm, and by NYC TV (Channel 25) on Thursday, May 24 at 8pm and Saturday, May 26 at 10pm.

Tom Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopia was the night’s big winner, taking home seven awards, including Outstanding Play. Spring Awakening received four Drama Desks, including Outstanding Musical, while Company and Journey’s End each received three awards, including Outstanding Revival of a Musical and Revival of a Play, respectively.

Two categories resulted in a tie: Audra McDonald and Donna Murphy shared the award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical for their work in 110 in the Shade and LoveMusik, respectively; while Jonathan Tunick and Mary-Mitchell Campbell shared the Outstanding Orchestration Award for LoveMusik and Company, respectively.
