Woody Allen to Be Subject of American Masters Documentary

Oscar winner Woody Allen will be the subject of a PBS American Masters documentary, according to a report in Variety. Robert Weide is directing the two-part program that is scheduled to air this fall.

The project will chronicle Allen’s childhood and early career as a TV writer and standup comic through his most recent film, Midnight in Paris, which will open the festival in Cannes next month. Allen has cooperated on the project, allowing Weide to film him at home and in the editing room.

Allen’s work for the stage includes the plays From A to Z, Don’t Drink the Water, Play It Again, Sam, The Floating Lightbulb, Writer’s Block, and A Second Hand Memoir.

He won Academy Awards for both writing and directing Annie Hall, and for writing Hannah and Her Sisters. In addition, he has received Oscar nominations for his screenplays for Match Point, Deconstructing Harry, Mighty Aphrodite, Husbands and Wives, Alice, Radio Days, The Purple Rose of Cairo, and Manhattan. In addition, he received dual nominations as writer and director for Bullets Over Broadway, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Broadway Danny Rose, and Interiors.
