Encompass New Opera to Present Angel of the Amazon

Encompass New Opera will present Evan Mack’s new music drama, Angel of the Amazon, May 6-22 at The Jerome Robbins Theater at Baryshnikov Arts Center. The production will be directed by Nancy Rhodes, and conducted by Mara Waldman.

This work is based on the true story of Sister Dorothy Stang, an American missionary who devoted 40 years to helping the indigenous farmers of the Brazilian rainforest, and was brutally murdered by assassins hired by the owner of a logging company, who felt her passion for the Earth and all of its gifts to be a threat.

The cast will include Caitlin Mathes as Sister Dorothy, along with José Rubio, Michael Armstrong Barr, Jose Candelaria, Malena Dayen, Amanda-Camille Isaac, Douglas Jabara, Amanda Lee, Matthew Morris, Brittany Palmer, Adam Russell, Justin Ryan, Lara Stevens, and Elex Lee Vann.

Sets, lighting and projections are designed by J. Michael Deegan, and costume design is by Victoria E.S. DePew.
