Grammy Award-winner Corey Glover (lead singer of the band Living Colour) will portray the central role of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Joshua Henry will perform as Eldridge Cleaver in Waterwell’s one night production of The/King/Operetta, April 7. Directed by Tom Ridgely, this production will be part of Waterwell’s third annual cabaret benefit.

The/King/Operetta is about one of America’s most loved and misunderstood figures, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. This production will include never-heard-songs from the musical (presented last summer at Barrow Street Theatre), and the complete score will be performed. The benefit will help underwrite Waterwell’s upcoming Untitled #9, premiering in early 2009.

As previously announced, participants will also include Eisa Davis as Coretta Scott King, Alison Pill as Joan Didion, Jay O. Sanders as Lyndon B. Johnson, John Eric Parker as Huey P. Newton, Taylor Mac as J. Edgar Hoover, Sarah Saltzberg as Toni Fortuna, and The Apple Sisters as the Hula Hana Girls, among others. The/King/Operetta will also feature Waterwell ensemble members Rodney Gardiner, Arian Moayed, Hanna Cheek and Kevin Townley. Hosted by Cheek and Townley, the evening will feature a tribute to Anne Mollegen Smith as well as a Silent Auction and a post-performance party with the artists.
